IU researchers recognized in Europe for offshore wind energy research

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- Indiana University Bloomington atmospheric scientist Rebecca Barthelmie, a professor in the Department of Geological Sciences in the College of Arts and Sciences, received a poster award at the recent European Offshore Wind Energy conference in Frankfurt, Germany.

Barthelmie and her co-authors, including Sara C. Pryor, Provost Professor of Atmospheric Sciences and associate vice provost for faculty and academic affairs, were recognized for their poster on "Wake Merging at Lillgrund," a study of turbine wakes at the Lillgrund Wind Farm off the coast of Sweden.

Some 170 researchers presented posters in Frankfurt, and the conference handed out three student awards and three nonstudent awards. Other co-authors with Barthelmie and Pryor are Kurt Hansen of the Danish Technical University and Eoghan Maguire of Vattenfall Research in Edinburgh, Scotland.

"We are using the data from the wind farm control system to understand how individual turbines interact with the atmosphere and how much energy is lost because wind turbines are operating in the wakes, or wind shadow, of other wind turbines," Barthelmie said. "Understanding this behavior will lead to better optimized wind farm layouts."

The research is a collaboration with Vattenfall, the owner of the wind farm; the Danish Technical University; and Indiana University.

In addition to participating in the European Offshore Wind Energy conference, Barthelmie was in Europe as the Erasmus Mundus scholar invited to the Danish Technical University to lecture for the European Wind Energy Master program, an advanced master's degree program with specializations in wind physics, rotor design, electric power systems and offshore engineering. Indiana University is a partner institution in the program.

The European Offshore Wind Energy Conference is a project of the European Wind Energy Association, an organization that promotes wind power in Europe and worldwide. The association has more than 700 members from almost 60 countries, including research institutes, wind turbine manufacturers, component suppliers, national wind and renewables associations and others.
